| History of Talento Bilingue de Houston Founded in 1977 as "Teatro Bilingüe de Houston" (Bilingual Theater of Houston), this non-profit organization has evolved into a Latino Cultural Arts Center that has offered programs and activities such as mariachi, ballet folklorico, video and film production, professional theater, art exhibitions, festivals, and photography.
Talento Bilingüe de Houston is adjacent to Guadalupe Plaza Park, a mission style park and Buffalo Bayou, a few miles from downtown Houston and is in a 16,000 square foot facility leased from the City of Houston Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department. Our facility has a 300-seat theater, rehearsal room, art exhibit and gallery space, gift shop, video and film editing suite, photograph and darkroom space, and administrative offices. The facility was redeveloped with a $992,000 Community Development Block Grant through the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department in 1996.
In 2002, the Board of Directors adopted a business plan prepared for the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County (CACHH) that targeted Talento Bilingüe de Houston as the appropriate agency in the City of Houston to develop itself further as a Latino Cultural Arts Center. It's original mission statement and purpose to perpetuate cultural enrichment in the Latino community through education programs involving classes and workshops, and through the presentation of bilingual (Spanish/English) theatrical programs for the public is expanding to include the needs of a diverse and growing Latino population that live in Houston and to those who visit our city. In addition, Talento Bilingüe de Houston is evolving as a venue for other multicultural performing arts groups. |
